Leveraging Quantum Computing for Client Success


As a UK-based software house with over 30 years’ experience, we never strayed away from innovation. Examples of this type of innovation in action include our early interest in low-code or our
recent quantum adoption journey.  After conducting thorough research on the most promising use cases for quantum computing and validating this technology’s maturity, we became firm believers in quantum’s transformative potential. That’s why our company decided to continue investing our efforts into this particular technology. 


Quantum-Based Travel Optimisation


One of the first goals of our internal quantum computing team was to increase the awareness of the possibilities of this technology across the organisation. You can see the results of those advocacy 
efforts in the case study describing an internal application that leveraged quantum computing for travel optimisation. The idea was to create a solution that would support the user in planning travels that require multiple 
airplane flights. As a result, the user would receive a proposed travel plan with the possibility of minimising the time, carbon emissions, costs, or a combination of those factors. All based on real flight data and quantum-powered calculations. During our company’s IDEAapp_ hackathon, the quantum team built the entire application in 48 hours. The finished tool showcases the potential of this cutting-edge technology. An intuitive
interface allows the user to leverage simple sliders to optimise their travel schedule based on time, cost, and carbon footprint. The team took this opportunity to boost the understanding of quantum’s possibilities in different parts of the organisation. In just two days, they managed to build a solution that deals with a complex optimisation problem. This provided tangible evidence that current-day quantum computers are capable of generating business value and that Objectivity's team has the necessary capabilities to execute a quantum-based project quickly.


Optimisation of Stock and Production Processes


While it was undeniably an important step, the internal travel optimisation project was only a sign of bigger things to come. We’ve recently published our first quantum computing case study detailing a successful commercial project delivered for a luxury consumer goods manufacturer. The project’s goal was to validate whether current-day quantum computers are capable of improving the client’s production and stock optimisation processes. Our experts utilised D-Wave’s quantum annealers to optimise complex production processes for two large datasets, sourced from two of the client’s brands. It was crucial to use real-life client data to make sure that the pilot project yields credible and business-relevant results. The outcome was impressive. The quantum technology managed to execute the tasks many times faster than the traditional solver the client was using at the time. Moreover, it produced multiple business-relevant scenarios instead of just one. As a result, the client received clear proof that quantum computing could be a valuable addition to their technology stack. It also unlocked a more holistic approach to the production planning process thanks to the possibility of introducing extra dimensions to the simulations. The tool would allow the client to make their stock planning processes more comprehensive and advanced. Additionally, Objectivity prepared a detailed set of recommendations for the future use of quantum computing in this and other parts of the organisation.
