PHP (full name: PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) is a scripting language that was originally designed to produce dynamic web pages. The code can be embedded into HTML and generally runs on a web server that needs to be configured to process PHP code and create the actual web page content. PHP runs on most web servers, operating systems and hardware platforms and the code is therefore truly portable. PHP is similar to server-side scripting languages such as Active Server Pages, JavaServer Pages and mod_perl (Apache). PHP is widely used with Open Source databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL. A classic configuration is Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL (LAMP).
